Wooden dining chairs and solid teak arm chairs, easy chairs, and rocking chairs — made from genuine Nilambur wild teak sourced from Kerala Forest Department depots. Every chair is built to order in the Royal Nilambur workshop, with mortise and tenon joints at every structural stress point and a 10-year warranty. Denser, oilier, and more durable than plantation teak — these are chairs bought once and used for decades.
Every piece is made to order
Handcrafted in Nilambur · 10-year structural warranty · Free delivery across South India
A wooden dining chair takes more daily structural punishment than almost any other piece of furniture in a home — pulled, tilted, sat on hard, shifted across floors, and stacked when relatives visit. Royal Nilambur's chairs are made from Nilambur wild teak, one of the densest naturally growing timbers in India, sourced legally from Kerala Forest Department depots in Malappuram district. Whether you are looking for a set of teak wood dining chairs, a deep-cushioned easy chair for reading, or a rocking chair for the veranda, every piece is made to order in the Nilambur workshop and carries a 10-year structural warranty.
The chair is where wood furniture fails earliest — specifically at the seat rail, where the back leg meets the seat frame under the full weight of a person leaning backwards. In mass-produced wooden chairs, this joint is typically held by a dowel and adhesive. It loosens within a few years of daily use. Royal Nilambur chairs use mortise and tenon joinery at every structural stress point, which means the joint is mechanical, not adhesive-dependent. Combined with Nilambur wild teak's naturally high density — a result of slow growth in Kerala's heavy-monsoon forest conditions — these chairs do not develop the wobble that signals the beginning of the end for most wooden seating.
Each chair is built to order from kiln-seasoned Nilambur wild teak, dried to 10–12% moisture content before any machining begins. This prevents the micro-movement in the wood that causes joints to loosen and surface finishes to crack over time. Key construction and specification details:
The Indian market for wooden furniture is crowded with pieces described as "solid wood" that are, on closer inspection, engineered wood cores with a veneer face or plantation teak of variable quality. Royal Nilambur sources exclusively from Kerala Forest Department timber depots — traceable, government-regulated procurement of genuine wild teak. There are no shortcuts in the material, and none in the making. Every chair leaves the Nilambur workshop as a made-to-order piece, not a warehouse-stocked unit. A wooden chair set from Royal Nilambur is not a five-year purchase. It is a decision you make once.
Plantation teak is grown in open plots, often harvested in 20–25 years. The growth is fast and the annual rings are wide, which means lower wood density and less natural oil per cubic centimetre. Nilambur wild teak grows in competitive forest conditions over 60–80 years or more, producing tighter annual rings and measurably higher natural oil content. That oil is not a treatment applied at the workshop — it is part of the wood's cellular structure. For chairs used daily in a city like Mumbai, where humidity swings significantly across the year, this matters: the wood does not absorb and release moisture the way low-oil plantation teak does, so the joints stay tight and the frame stays square. The honey-brown colour deepens over years of use rather than fading — it is the wood itself ageing, not a surface coating.
The right chair depends on both the room and the use. Here is what to consider before ordering:
Standard Indian dining tables are 75–76 cm in height. A dining chair seat height of 44–46 cm leaves a comfortable 29–31 cm clearance between the seat and the tabletop — enough for most adults to sit without feeling cramped. If your table is custom height, mention it when ordering and the chair height can be adjusted accordingly.
For dining chairs: Allow at least 60 cm of linear space per chair at the table edge for comfortable seating — 65–70 cm if you prefer more elbow room. A 1.5-metre rectangular table comfortably seats four; a 1.8-metre table seats six. Do not try to seat six at a 1.5-metre table with wooden chairs — it works for a meal, but not for a family that eats together every day.
For easy chairs and rocking chairs: Account for the full swing arc of a rocking chair — typically 35–40 cm front to back — before placing it against a wall or near other furniture. Easy chairs need at least 45 cm of clearance on either side for comfortable entry and exit. Check the floor-to-armrest height against your preferred seating posture before ordering.
On weight and delivery: A solid wild teak dining chair weighs 8–12 kg. A full set of six is heavy but manageable in two trips. For upper-floor flats without lifts, contact us before ordering — we can advise on assembly logistics and, where necessary, arrange delivery in sections.
Nilambur wild teak grows slowly in Kerala's natural forests, producing denser wood with significantly higher natural oil content than plantation teak or the fast-grown teak used in most mass-market wooden chairs. That density means harder surfaces that resist denting and scratching. The higher oil content means the wood is inherently resistant to moisture absorption, fungal decay, and termite damage — without chemical treatment. A wooden dining chair made from Nilambur wild teak will feel heavier and more solid than a plantation teak equivalent, and that difference in weight is a direct measure of the wood's density.
A well-made solid teak chair — properly jointed, not adhesive-dependent — will last 30–40 years under normal daily use. The structural warranty Royal Nilambur offers is 10 years, but that reflects the minimum we stand behind, not the expected lifespan. Teak's natural oil content means it does not dry out and crack the way softer woods do in dry Indian winters or under constant air conditioning. The joints stay tight because the wood is dimensionally stable.
Yes — and this is one of the specific conditions where the material advantage of Nilambur wild teak is most visible. In Chennai or Kochi, where ambient humidity stays high for months at a stretch, lower-quality wood swells, joints open up, and surface finishes blister. Nilambur wild teak's high natural oil content acts as an internal moisture barrier, keeping the wood dimensionally stable through humidity cycles. No additional sealing or treatment is required for indoor use in coastal climates.
Yes. Royal Nilambur makes wooden dining chair sets to match any table in our catalogue, and we can also match chairs to an existing table if you provide the dimensions and finish reference. A wooden chair set of 4 or 6 ordered alongside a dining table is made in the same production run, so grain character and finish tone are consistent across all pieces. Mention your requirement when placing the order.
For indoor chairs finished in teak oil or a natural stain, wipe down with a lightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Once a year, apply a thin coat of teak oil to nourish the surface — this takes fifteen minutes and is the extent of the annual maintenance required. Avoid leaving wet cushions on the chair seat for extended periods. There is no sanding, no re-staining, and no professional refinishing needed under normal indoor use conditions.
Every wooden dining chair and seating piece in this collection is built after you place your order — not pulled from a warehouse shelf. The 4–6 week lead time is the time it takes to select and season the timber, cut the joints, and finish each piece properly. That process cannot be shortened without compromising the result. Royal Nilambur ships across India, with full packaging designed for long-distance freight. Your 10-year warranty begins the day the chairs arrive.
